Spring Hike – Alpine Meadow

While waiting for paint to dry, what better way to spend a gorgeous Spring day than climbing a mountain?  My hard-working helper, Caroline (from Germany), and I both needed a break so on with the packs and hiking boots! No brave wildflowers out on the trip up, but the birds were singing and there was a lone Big Horn Sheep ewe grazing on the adjacent slope. Lunch at the top was rewarding as always and Caroline discovered the joy of bum sliding on the way back down. Caroline has now gone on to her next adventure, the painting is done … Continue reading

The Canadian Dream

Hello, I am the aforementioned Kat (see Harry’s earlier blog post) and I am also a recent Zoology graduate from the University of Manchester.  I found this place while in the midst of a particularly draining university assignment and was in dire need for ‘escape’.  The wonders of the internet brought me to Laura’s website and here I am! Whoever said procrastination was a bad thing? During my studies, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have travelled around the world on various field courses and even managed to bag a year in Seychelles working in sea turtle conservation in the name … Continue reading

Two Brits up Munn Creek without a paddle

My name is Harry Martin and I’ve spent the last three weeks learning the ropes as a guide, chauffeur, cleaner and general all round helper here at Rocky Mountain Escape.  It’s been a steep learning curve, getting to know the local trails, roads and wildlife, but I can’t believe how fast it has gone already.  I arrived in Canada shortly after graduating this summer, from the University of Manchester, with a degree in Zoology looking for a way to gain more experience, while seeing an incredible part of the world at the same time. I’ve travelled here with a friend … Continue reading

A long overdue return to “topside”

Howdy, folks, I take shelter from our delayed June rains & listen to fat drops of rain patter off the tin roof of the cookhouse.  With Islander Chicken simmering on the stove, I take a moment to reflect on what has been a completely atypical weekend (for me!)  A much needed break from the consulting world had me making the drive out here with one primary objective: a return to Binocular Ridge. I was trying to recall, with the Boss’ help, when last I’d made the ascent and subsequent ridge walk.  As near as we could both remember, it was … Continue reading

Susan’s Last Hike – The Berland

It’s the last trek out for Susan, and our guests chose an elevation that they all could do together – the Berland Ridge! Susan and Becky set off with the group early Saturday morning in two vehicles, as Molly and Leo were keen to join in. We were still enjoying the beautiful Indian summer here at the ‘Escape so lots of extra water was packed. As we arrived at our starting point, we noticed the trees are now a shimmery golden colour, contrasting with the orange and red flora below.  The mushrooms are a struggle to find and the only … Continue reading

We Only Hike In The Fall……

No, wait!! We hike year round, but Indian Summer brings fair weather  and makes ELEVATION HIKES (Laura’s favourite) soooooo pleasurable! A couple of days after their Hoff Ridge adventure, Laura and Becky took our guests, Mick and Brenda, up the Alpine Meadow. They had done the Viewpoint the previous day and were ready for a much more challenging hike –  the weather was great…. so why not!! This was the first time any of us had ventured to the meadow since the video cameras had been put up in August, so we were looking forward to seeing if there had been … Continue reading
